Servicing & maintenance of portable fire extinguishers (4 Days)

Theoretical training and practical experience over four days for the servicing & maintenance of various types of portable extinguisher. Based on BS 5306-­3 ‘Servicing and Maintenance’, BS 5306­-8 ‘Selecting and Positioning’

  • Anyone who will be carrying out the servicing and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers
  • Anyone likely to answer technical questions regarding portable extinguishers
  • None

Tools

This course requires each delegate to bring a set of tools to participate:

  • Rubber Hammer / Mallet
  • 10” Adjustable spanner (For co2 horn removal)
  • 1 x 2kg spring balance scale (Used to determine cartridge weight)
  • 1 x Digital scale (These must be suitable for weighing the extinguisher itself. Please ensure the hook at the bottom of the scale is small enough to fit inside the wall hanging bracket of an extinguisher. 25kg Electro Samson scales are commonly used for this purpose)
  • Torch
  • Pliers
  • Cleaning brush (2" paintbrush will work for this)
  • Gauge bradawl tester (Paperclips will work here if an appropriate bradawl cannot be sourced)
  • Anti Tamper Seals
  • Gauge dots / Year patch stickers
  • Cloth

The following is not required but will prove useful for servicing practise:

  • Screwdriver or pick for o-ring removal
  • Co2 O-rings
  • Mole grips
  • Air pump gauge tester (for larger coil sprung gauges found on Older Nu Swift / Moyne Roberts / Amerex products

 

BAFE Fire Extinguisher Exam - Identification of Candidates

From the 1st April 2024, all candidates (learners) taking the fire extinguisher exam (theory or practical) including resits will have to show accepted photo ID to the BAFE invigilator as part of the signing in process. This will confirm the identity of the candidate and the invigilator will mark the registration sheet to confirm they have seen it. No copies or photographs of the photo ID provided will be taken

International travel

• Passport issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country (including an Irish Passport Card)

Driving and Parking

• Driving licence issued by the UK, any of the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or an EEA state (this includes a provisional driving licence)

Proof of age

• Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card)

  • Delegates take two exams, a theory exam with 70 Questions in a multiple choice format and a practical exam. Both exams require a 75% or above pass mark will be issued with a BAFE certificate. The results take 2-3 to be processed following the day of the exam.

Delegates should attend a refresher course every three years to maintain current knowledge and certification
