A devastating house fire in Coventry, which led to the tragic loss of two lives, was determined to have been caused accidentally by a converted electric bike, according to West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS).
Firefighters were called to the incident in Stoke Aldermoor early on Friday morning and discovered two deceased individuals inside the property. Following a thorough investigation, WMFS confirmed that the fire originated from a pedal bike, converted into an electric bike, which had been stored in the hallway of the maisonette.
The victims of the fire have not yet been formally identified. Crews responded to the call from The Coppice just before 04:40 GMT and encountered a severe fire that had spread throughout the entire property. WMFS extended their condolences, saying, “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic accident,” while withholding further details regarding the cause and the victims.
Four fire engines were dispatched to the scene, with the first arriving in under four minutes. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, entered the property to tackle the blaze, which was successfully extinguished by 05:55 GMT. WMFS fire investigation officers, assisted by a fire investigation dog and police, conducted a detailed investigation to determine the origin of the fire.
Important Fire Safety Tips for Electric Bike Owners
With the popularity of electric bikes growing, it's crucial to keep safety in mind:
Avoid DIY Conversions: Improperly converted bikes can be hazardous. Stick to professionally manufactured and certified e-bikes.
Store Bikes Safely: Never store e-bikes or their batteries in confined spaces or escape routes. Choose well-ventilated areas away from flammable materials.
Charge Responsibly: Always use the correct charger provided by the manufacturer and avoid overcharging. Never charge an e-bike overnight or unattended.
Regularly Inspect for Damage: Check wiring, battery casing, and connections for signs of wear or damage, and have any issues addressed by a qualified technician.
Electric bikes can be a safe and sustainable option when handled with care. Please ensure your safety and the safety of others by following these important guidelines.
