The Fire Industry Association has released an update regarding the adoption of new Short Range Device frequency bands that will impact wireless fire detection and evacuation systems. This update is crucial for manufacturers, designers, and engineers working within fire detection and alarm systems, as it addresses key changes in frequency allocations adopted across Europe and the UK.

The Fire Industry Association (FIA) is pleased to share an update regarding the approval of new frequency bands for Short Range Devices (SRDs), which include wireless fire detection and evacuation systems. These additional frequency options will soon be available in countries that have adopted them, meaning members may start seeing equipment operating on these new bands.

Previously, the 868 MHz band (863-870 MHz) was the only fully harmonised frequency for SRDs in Europe, including the UK. With the approval of additional bands, manufacturers will have greater flexibility to enhance system performance and reduce interference.

It's important to note that all radio equipment, including wireless fire safety systems, must still comply with the Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) to ensure reliability and safety.

The full technical guidance, including references to relevant standards such as BS 5839-1, can be accessed by downloading the guidance document.
