Following criticism from the Grenfell Public Inquiry, the government has released research into construction product standards and testing. With new regulatory bodies now overseeing safety standards, this report will help shape future reforms. A consultation on proposed changes, including greater oversight and improved transparency, is also underway.

The government has published research into construction product standards and testing, following criticism from the Grenfell Public Inquiry regarding past failures to release building safety research.

The initial research was completed in November 2020 to assess whether a dedicated work programme was needed to review construction product standards. However, this was later superseded by the creation of two key regulatory bodies: the National Regulator for Construction Products (within the Office for Product Safety and Standards) and the Building Safety Regulator.

These regulators now oversee the standards referenced in statutory guidance, and the findings of this research were shared with them to support their future work.

Additionally, the government has launched a consultation on proposed reforms to the construction products regime. Key proposals include greater regulatory oversight of the standards-setting process, enhanced transparency, and measures to improve the quality of standards.
