After an impressive 12 years of service, London Fire Brigade’s longest-serving fire investigation dog, Sherlock, is set to retire. The cocker spaniel, who joined the brigade at just 10 weeks old, has played a vital role in fire investigations, including attending the Grenfell Tower fire and even meeting royalty.
Trained to detect up to 10 different flammable liquids, such as petrol and acetone, Sherlock has spent recent years engaging with communities on fire safety and prevention.
His handler, Group Commander Paul Osborne, reflected on Sherlock’s remarkable career: "In dog years, Sherlock is 100 years old, so it's only fitting for him to hang up his boots now and take a well-earned break. He'll enjoy a relaxed retirement filled with naps on the sofa, his favourite walks and plenty of belly rubs."
Mr Osborne further praised Sherlock’s contribution: "As Sherlock embarks on this new chapter of his life, his contribution and achievements during his time within London Fire Brigade are testament to his dedication, expertise and unwavering service."
The brigade selects specialist fire investigation dogs based on their strong drive to play. As Sherlock steps down, he will pass on his duties to two new recruits, eight-year-old Simba and three-year-old Smokey.
According to LFB, fire investigation dogs typically serve for around a decade, maintaining their skills through annual training refreshers.
Sherlock’s legacy leaves a lasting impact on fire investigation and community safety, and he will be remembered as a true hero of the London Fire Brigade.
