How can AI Transform Fire Safety in Homes?

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are beginning to reshape fire safety, offering smarter ways to detect risks, reduce false alarms, and improve home protection. Andy Speake, National Technical Manager and FIA IoT Forum Chair, discusses how these technologies are making a difference today and what the future holds for AI in fire safety.
Andy explains that machine learning, a key part of AI, works by analysing historical data to identify trends and patterns. This makes fire detection more accurate by distinguishing between real threats and nuisance alarms. By using AI-driven insights, landlords and fire safety professionals can make better-informed decisions about whether an issue requires maintenance or emergency intervention. However, he stresses that final decisions should always rest with humans, as life safety systems must remain under human control.
AI is also improving how different safety systems work together. In-home sensors monitor factors such as CO2 levels, humidity, and temperature, and AI can use this data to detect patterns and predict fire risks. For example, high levels of dust in a room can interfere with smoke alarms, but with AI, alarm sensitivity can be adjusted dynamically. AI-driven systems can also consider factors such as building type and location to assess potential fire risks more accurately.
Although AI in fire safety is still in its early stages, Andy believes the improvements it offers will only grow over time. As technology advances, AI will shift from simply detecting fires to actively preventing them by identifying risk factors before they lead to emergencies. The more data these systems gather, the more precise they will become, helping to create safer homes and communities.
The fire safety sector has traditionally been cautious about adopting new technology due to strict regulations. However, Andy points out that other industries, such as automotive and aviation, have successfully introduced AI without compromising safety. As connected alarm systems become more common, landlords and housing providers are starting to see the benefits of AI, particularly in remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance. By providing engineers with key information before they attend a property, AI can reduce unnecessary callouts and maintenance costs while improving overall efficiency.
While some residents may be wary of AI making critical safety decisions, Andy suggests that transparency is key to increasing trust. Most people are open to new technology when they understand how it works and can access relevant data themselves. Looking ahead, he expects AI to play an even greater role in fire safety, improving prevention, detection, and response. However, fully automating life-critical decisions remains a complex challenge, and human oversight will continue to be essential in ensuring the reliability and effectiveness of these systems.
