The Government has provided a progress update on its review of fire safety standards for domestic upholstered furniture, led by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). The update, shared by the Minister for Employment Rights, Competition and Markets, outlines proposed amendments to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (FFRs) and plans for further action.

The FFRs were originally introduced to tackle the rising number of fire-related fatalities linked to furniture. However, with advancements in product design and new evidence regarding the health risks of chemical flame retardants used in flammability tests, an update is needed to ensure the regulations remain fit for purpose.

The policy paper introduces a revised regulatory approach, identifies areas of agreement among stakeholders, and details remaining challenges to address.

To finalise the new measures, OPSS will collaborate closely with businesses, trade associations, and other key stakeholders, ensuring the updated regulations reflect modern safety needs while addressing industry concerns.
