Electrical fires cause three home fires every day in England, often sparked by everyday appliances like washing machines and tumble dryers. This Electrical Fire Safety Week, the FIA is sharing essential tips to help you protect your home.

06 February 2025

Electrical Fire Safety Week 2025 is here, and the Fire Industry Association (FIA) is raising awareness about the risks posed by electrical fires in our homes. This year’s campaign, led by Electrical Safety First, focuses on white goods safety, highlighting how everyday appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers, and fridges can become fire hazards if not properly maintained.

Why Electrical Fire Safety Matters

Electrical fires remain a major concern across the UK. In 2024 alone, 1,140 accidental electrical fires involving white goods were recorded in England, that’s three fires every day. By understanding potential hazards and following essential safety measures, homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires.

The FIA emphasises the importance of maintaining electrical appliances to prevent dangerous situations. A crucial step is registering your appliances online, allowing manufacturers to notify you of any safety recalls or potential risks. This simple process can help prevent incidents before they occur.

White Goods Safety: Essential Tips

White goods, such as washing machines and tumble dryers, require regular checks to ensure they are safe for use. Here’s how you can protect your home:

  • Never leave washing machines, tumble dryers, or dishwashers running overnight or unattended.
  • Clean tumble dryer filters regularly to remove lint and fluff, which can easily catch fire.
  • Ensure appliances are well-ventilated and installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Register new appliances to receive safety alerts about recalls.
  • Check plugs and sockets for scorch marks, buzzing noises, or loose connections.
  • Only buy electrical appliances from reputable retailers - avoid counterfeit or untested products.

The Hidden Danger of Lithium-Ion Batteries

It’s not just large appliances that pose a risk, smaller electronics using lithium-ion batteries can be just as dangerous if mishandled. These batteries are found in mobile phones, laptops, e-bikes, e-scooters, and vaping devices. If damaged, they can overheat, leak, or even explode.

How to Charge Safely:

  • Never charge devices under pillows, on beds, or near flammable materials.
  • Unplug devices once fully charged to avoid overheating.
  • Use only manufacturer-approved chargers avoid cheap, untested alternatives.
  • Replace damaged cables or plugs immediately.
  • Avoid counterfeit chargers, which can overheat and cause fires.

Safe Disposal of Electrical Items and Batteries

Old electrical devices and batteries should never be placed in household waste. Instead:

  • Use battery recycling points at supermarkets or electrical retailers.
  • Tape the ends of lithium-ion batteries before recycling to reduce fire risks.
  • Take old appliances to designated recycling centres or contact your local council for disposal advice.

Find your nearest recycling point via Recycle Your Electricals, simply enter your postcode to locate safe disposal sites.

Staying Safe: A Shared Responsibility

The FIA is committed to promoting electrical fire safety and ensuring that individuals, businesses, and organisations stay informed about potential hazards. Whether it’s registering your appliances, following safe charging practices, or disposing of electronics responsibly, these simple steps can save lives.

Stay informed, stay safe, and spread the word during Electrical Fire Safety Week 2025.
