In an incident during rush hour, an electric double-decker bus burst into flames in the heart of Wimbledon, causing a loud bang and thick smoke.

In an occurrence that unfolded during yesterday's morning rush hour, an electric double-decker bus became an area of chaos in Wimbledon, erupting into flames and prompting concerned residents to report a loud explosion accompanied by thick smoke. 

Local resident Max Pashley, recounting the incident, expressed the community's terror, stating, "We heard a huge bang. We were terrified," as reported to City A.M. Fortunately, despite the intensity of the fire, there have been no reported injuries, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.

Acknowledging the local community's resilience, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police conveyed gratitude, stating, "We thank the local community for their patience and cooperation as emergency services work at the scene." The London Fire Brigade swiftly responded to the emergency, with crews dispatched to Alwyne Road near the Alexandra pub after receiving a call at 7:21 am. Simultaneously, the Metropolitan Police were alerted at 7:23 am, leading to the establishment of a 25-metre cordon around the incident to ensure public safety.

Wimbledon Hill Road experienced congestion as a result of partial blockage, while disruptions extended to Wimbledon Village southbound and the Broadway northbound. Road users were diverted away from the affected area to facilitate emergency response efforts.

As investigations unfold, a spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade indicated uncertainty about the exact cause of the fire.
