A house fire in Nuneaton has been traced back to an e-bike malfunction, according to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Emergency crews responded to the incident in Grove Farm at approximately 21:00 BST on Monday after an occupant heard loud bangs while showering.
Though the e-bike was not charging at the time, it had begun to malfunction, leading to the fire. The fire resulted in smoke damage to the ground floor of the residence, but all occupants were able to evacuate safely.
Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to schedule a free fire safety visit to help minimise fire risks at home.
The service highlighted that lithium battery fires can quickly escalate, burning intensely and proving difficult to extinguish. Warning signs of potential issues with e-bike batteries include bulging or swelling, cracking sounds, hissing noises, and failure to fully charge.
To ensure safety, it is crucial to follow government guidance on the use and maintenance of e-bikes. This includes using only manufacturer-recommended chargers, avoiding modifications, and purchasing products from reputable sources. Adhering to these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of battery-related fires and enhance overall safety.
The fire service also noted that many e-bike fires stem from the use of incompatible chargers, modifications to the bikes, or faulty and counterfeit products often purchased online.
