Dame Diana Johnson DBE has been appointed as the new Minister of State for Crime, Policing, and Fire. Recently re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Kingston upon Hull North and Cottingham with a substantial majority, Dame Diana will now take on the responsibility of overseeing fire policy and operations as part of her ministerial duties.

As the first female MP for Hull, Dame Diana has a distinguished background in law and public service. She earned an LLB in Law from Queen Mary University of London and became a barrister in 1991. Her legal career includes significant work at the Paddington Law Centre, where she served from 1999 to 2005. Before entering Parliament in 2005, she was a local councillor and a non-executive director in the NHS.

Dame Diana's contributions to public life have been recognised with numerous accolades. She served as a councillor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets from 1994 to 2002, where she chaired social services. Additionally, she was a member of the London Assembly and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2020 for her charitable and political service, particularly her advocacy on behalf of those affected by contaminated blood transfusions. She was also appointed to the Privy Council in 2021.

Throughout her parliamentary career, Dame Diana has chaired the Home Affairs Select Committee and participated in several other key committees, including the Intelligence and Security Committee. She has been active in numerous cross-party Parliamentary groups and holds patronage positions with several charitable organisations.

In the lead-up to the recent General Election, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) expressed support for Labour’s commitment to revitalising the Fire and Rescue Service. The plan includes giving firefighters and their Trade Union a greater voice in how the service is run. Moving forward, Labour will collaborate with Trade Unions and other stakeholders to establish a national structure aimed at enhancing standards in the Fire and Rescue Service, focusing on areas such as health, safety, and overall service performance.
